Monday Fog / Just Do It Progress

It's a foggy rainy day here in Atlanta. I'm not complaining because I finally got all of my pots planted on our back deck and front stoop. No more dead. This day of rain is great for my newly planted flowers. I have also been a bit foggy in the head lately so I apologize for disappearing last week. We are all busy right?

Besides planting yesterday, I was able to get some other things done around the house that have been on my to do list. Just moving some things around, hanging art, and dropping fabrics off at the workroom. Progress is happening and I hope to have some pictures posted soon of some complete and semi-complete spaces. Yeah!!!

I have also made some progress on my super long list of Just Do It items. All the things I've said I would do but never have. This week alone, I will be going to the dermatologist to get a skin cancer screening (boring but extremely necessary), starting Pilates, and getting my business license changes all sorted out. Nothing too crazy, but they've been on my list.

I have been working on actually putting together a plan for each week and what I need to accomplish to move forward. It's been nice to check things off my list as well as see the progress in certain areas. All the little things have been adding up. I just have to remind myself that taking steps will get me there. Unfortunately I am one of those people that will look at a project and if I can't get it done right then, then it freaks me out and I don't start. I hope I can keep the momentum going and really get some things done. Other than that I have been working and spending time with my husband and friends.

I hope you all have a great week ahead, get to complete all that's on your list, and do something just for yourself as well.

Motivation Comes In Waves

Motivation is my arch nemesis. We just haven't figured each other out entirely or how to work well with one another. It's just one of those things that I am learning about myself that my motivation comes in waves, and that I get into these ruts of mediocrity.

I always have such great internal dialogue with myself and visions of grandeur on getting things accomplished. Then, it just takes me forever to actually do it. My priorities have been a bit off and lately have been geared more towards relaxation and leisure.

Now, don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with relaxation and leisure. It's just that these things are getting in the way of things I would like to accomplish. To sum it up....I am in my own way! I am the only thing holding back success and accomplishment. I fall back to the things that are comfortable and easy instead of putting myself out there and taking risks. Risk freaks me out. And really what I want isn't that huge of a risk....I am just thinking it is.

I need to figure out how to get through this little problem so I can be everything I think I can be. Sorry to step away from design today. I am designing my life right now. This has been a little post on self realization and accountability.

ouch...that actually hurts. But it's true!

Have you guys seen the recent GSD posts over at Mimi+Meg? Get over there if you haven't. Fabulous idea and I have loved both posted so far. Just reading about other people getting it together and accomplishing their dreams is very motivating. And they actually somewhat spell out how to do it. I have read a couple of things I would like to implement to make things a bit easier. Hopefully it will stick....though in all honesty I will probably need some more posts from her to really get kick started.

It's Monday! The perfect day to start something.
Have a great week :)

Just Do It!

With the start of the new year many people put down their list of resolutions for the year ahead. A list of ways to better themselves or accomplishments that they will strive for.

Well, this year I am not making such a list. I only have one resolution this year, and that is to actually do it. By "it" I mean everything. Everything I say I will do, I will do.

That linen closet I am always saying I'm going to organize....will be organized. This blog that needs a new look.....will get a new look. My wardrobe and style that needs a revamp.....will be revamped! Too many things have been stated and never started. No longer will I let this continue.

For too long I have talked the talk. It's now time to walk the walk. I am the only one who has been holding myself back, and in 2012, I'm getting out of my way. So even though it's a pretty loaded resolution, just doing it will be the best thing I have ever done.

Stay tuned, lots to come!

Getting Back On Track

So, yes I know I have been gone for months. Even after I said I would be back. Bad, bad, Lissa.

Well, I'm actually back this time and ready to get things back on track.
I've been busy yes, but I have also been doing a lot of relaxing and just doing the normal everyday thing. More of the everyday than anything cool really. And I miss blogging!

We have been living life. I am getting settled into my new job and now feel comfortable with what I am doing...you know, new job integration. I have been futzing around the house looking at it but not doing anything about it (sad state of affairs). And, we added a new member to the family in the form of a furry beast.

 Wallace

His name is Wallace and he has been taking up most of our time and attention, as he well should. He is a Norwich Terrier and has the most spunky personality. He definitely keeps us on our toes and has been a long awaited addition to our lives. Let's just say if anyone has questions about going through a breeder let me know....I spoke with lots of them :)

We have spent lots of time doing this.....gotta love the husband for taking pictures like this :)

So, other than that all is well. I just wanted to put up a post letting everyone know that I am still alive, and that if anyone is still reading I am back to post about design, inspiration, and what ever else I fancy. I hope everyone is doing well and I look forward to getting back into the blog world and talking to all of you guys!

See Ya,
Lissa

Lost

Sorry to drop off the face of the blog this past month. I got a little lost in my life. I have just been enjoying my time and didn't want to have really anything to do (like decide what I was going to post about). I took advantage of this time and caught up on reading, and just life in general.

Hope everyone is having a wonderful end of the summer/winter (depending on where you are)! I always look forward to the time when the seasons change. I figure another week or so and I'll be back to taking part in the wonderful world of blogging.

It's Labor Day weekend here and I am looking forward to that extra day of sleeping in and enjoying time at home. No plans this year...just laying low. Hope everyone has a great weekend and I'll be back soon.

Still Alive

This has been the longest break I have taken from blogging since I started a year ago. I'm not gonna lie...it's been nice. Though I do miss it, I have nothing to say right now and have also been able to devote my time to other aspects of my life. The new job takes devotion and energy, I have been dreaming and scheming on the new place, and I have been away for work. Next thing you know a month has passed!!!

I also thought about possibly hanging in the towel.....but then changed my mind. Some of you may have gotten to read that eloquent post in a reader and then it disappeared. Yes, I changed my mind. I was questioning where I was headed but have since decided that it doesn't really matter right now. I can't quit. I have to keep going. Maybe I'm not where I thought I would be, but that doesn't warrant quitting.

So, just wanted to stop in and let you know that yes, I'm still alive. And no, this blog is not going down. I'll be back next week with real posts on what this blog is all about....design. I just have to get back in the groove and get some things written. Till next week...have a great one!!!

Getting Things Back on Track

With any new venture there is a time of introspection. Looking at how you will take this "new start" and what you will do to make it great.

I can't tell you my schedule now has been the most efficient. In fact, it's been downright off. Spending too many hours watching TV, sleeping, and reading.....leaving behind all the regular things like work, cleaning, and all around everyday life. All of this due to what I'll call being in a rut.

Now that I have some new things going on I am working to get things back on track. A new job that will require time and energy in the fullest. Also, making sure everything else stays organized around me so that it all goes smoothly. I'm going to try and keep things regular on here, but I can't say that things won't get delayed etc. I have always been one to be good at multi-tasking but large scale multi-tasking is always a bit of a challenge. So, I'm taking this challenge head on and hopefully I come out with a more streamlined schedule and organized life.

Off to my first day! Have a great one.....

New Beginnings

Hope everyone had a wonderful Easter weekend spent with their family and friends! We spent the weekend relaxing for the most part but had a few gatherings thrown in there. Overall it was a great!

This week marks the beginning of an end for me. I am changing jobs and this is my last week before I start my new one! Yeah, no break for me but I am super excited for something new and all that is in store for the future.

I will miss my job and all the great people I have had the pleasure of working with over the past 5 years. It has been an amazing experience and I have learned so much. Designing hotels has been both rewarding and challenging and I know that I am more than prepared for what lies ahead.

So, all this week, I will be posting pictures on twitter of little things that have been part of my everyday life in hospitality design. Just a little sneak peak into my days and office. Oh, and don't freak out when I show you guys what a working design office really looks like........A crazy MESS!!!

Here's to a great week and new beginnings. Have a great week...I know I will!

Field Trip

I'm over at Arianna's blog Organized Interiors today with my list of the top 5 things that have influenced me the most.

I was flabbergasted and beyond honored when Arianna asked me to be a part of the series. She has an amazing blog and I anxiously await her next post each day. Its full of great inspiration and she always posts the most amazing spaces and organizing tips. If you haven't checked her out you are definitely missing out!

Check out my "5 Things", and also make sure you read about all the other ladies' "5 Things" HERE. It's always fun to read about what makes people tick.

I'm still here!

How is everyone??

Busy like me???? I hope not too much. Busy is always good, but the past couple of weeks have been brutal. We have some big projects in the office and I am pulling in some major overtime on those. And I have a new side project helping an amazing couple with their master bathroom!

I just wanted to stop in and say hey and to let you know that (a) I'm still alive, and (b) this blog is still alive. It's just taking a little rest while I get all of this work done. I get the chance every couple of days to check out some blogs and it seems like I'm not the only one.....Lots of people are busy! This is good. It means more people want the help of a designer again!

For the most part it will be spotty on here for the rest of the week, but hopefully not too much longer. Hope all is well with everyone and you all are enjoying a touch of spring. Stay busy, but stay sane!

Yeah For Birthdays!

This past weekend was a whirlwind of excitement. Moving into the new place and celebrating two birthdays has left this little lady tuckered out!

On Saturday night we had dinner with friends at Woodfire Grill. Amazing!! We had never been and I can't believe we waited this long. The food was awesome. We did the 7 course tasting menu with wine pairings. To say we were all stuffed and a bit tipsy would have been an understatement. I am still thinking about some of the dishes we had.

please excuse my glazed over face.....I was excited and this was after all the wine :)

And we got to spend some time with Kevin of  Top Chef fame. He was so nice and dare I say a bit taken aback by our rowdy group (remember 7 wine pairings). He was awesome though. Took pictures with all of us and answered all the foodie questions we had about the meal and everything else. All in all I would say this was a great birthday and the perfect meal with the best people.

After all this go go go for the past couple of months I am ready to relax. We are planning to take our time unpacking and getting it right.....best way to be organized in my opinion. I apologize for being light on here this week. I am ready to catch up on some neglected things and must get some rest too!

Here's to a new week, and the next 30 years for me!!!

Farewell House

Today is our last day at the house. It's bittersweet but also exciting. So many good memories but also some high electric bills. We would have loved to own this house and renovate it but it was never to be. All she needed was a nice complete gut job and she would have been the happiest house on the block.

This is the 1st place where we started our lives together....and brought all of our stuff together. We had parties, and spent lazy weekends watching movies. I'll miss it a lot.......

So goodbye house with your columns and amazing front porch......

Your charming built ins and fireplace........

Your great moldings..........

and kitchen my husband will truly miss..........

You have been great and we will always remember you as our first place. Unfortunately we can't stay but wish us luck as we venture off to bigger and better things. Don't be too sad, we'll probably drive by once and awhile to see how you look and remember all the fun times we had.

Thanks! But How Did This Happen?

Earlier this week I got a sweet email from Sherry over at Design Indulgence telling me she had bestowed me with the Stylish Blogger Award. What???? That can't be right. If you could only see what I was wearing when I opened the email...let's just say. Not Stylish! Ha ha. (Sorry that's snowed in cabin fever talking). Thanks so much Sherry for thinking of me.

So, the gist is that I am supposed to tell you 7 things about myself and then nominate/pass this on to 7 other bloggers. Good, 7 is my lucky number so here goes.......

1. I am from Richmond, VA originally and grew up there till I went to College in Raleigh, NC. I studied Interior Design at Meredith College and then moved down to Atlanta for a job....still here to this day.

2. I used to be a ballet dancer. I danced at the Richmond Ballet from age 3 till age 20. I was a trainee with the company but it all ended when I fell in rehearsal and twisted my knee. After surgery I decided it would be better for me to go to college...long story. People still point out that I stand like a ballerina to this day!

3. I met my husband out at a bar here in Atlanta celebrating my birthday. He just so happened to be celebrating his birthday too! We are a day apart (well, 4 years and a day). We went on our 1st date the next weekend and have been together ever since.

4. My favorite food is chicken nuggets. Yep I have a pallet of a 4 year old. I love kid foods. My husband is a major foodie and this drives him crazy sometimes when all I'm in the mood for is chicken nuggets or grilled cheese. I do like adult food as well though.

5. I can sleep. And by sleep, I mean 12-14 hours at a time. I often enjoy 12 hours of sleep on weekends and then also take naps during the day....I don't get alot done.

6. I am having trouble adding color to my life. Our house is pretty neutral as well as my wardrobe. If you see me wearing something colorful it's because I have borrowed it from my sister. I tried really hard after Christmas to get some color into my daily wardrobe. Good sales had me buying tons of stuff. Got home and realized it was all grey, black, and brown. I did get out with a muted purple sweater though...baby steps people.

7. My favorite color is green...whew, that was a hard one to admit. I hope people don't judge me too harshly (again....cabin fever  here)

And the 7 bloggers:
These are some blogs that I have been reading for awhile and love, and some that I have just recently started reading and am hooked. Some you may know and some you may not. Either way they are all amazing blogs and bloggers.

Jade @ Flip Flops and Pearls Design
Andrea @ Andrea Reh
Paula @ Two Ellie
Emily @ Senseless Sophistication
Anita @ A Dreamer's Den
Capella @ A Curated Lifestyle
Kate @ Centsational Girl

So that's it. Hope you learned a bit about me and if anything got some new blogs to look at. Thanks Again Sherry! Hope everyone is having a great week. As you can tell from my unhinged state above we are trapped at home because of ice and I can't wait to get out!

This Just Won't Do

Ok, so this isn't exactly a gorgeous design related post with tons of beautiful pictures....it is however a designer related post.

This is the extremely sad state of affairs at my desk (day job desk) and I can't take it anymore!!!! This is what happens when you are beyond too busy to even pick up after yourself........

Can you imagine sitting here all day??? It's eating away at my soul (okay so that's a slight exaggeration). Aren't designers supposed to be surrounded by inspiring spaces to be creative? Or at the very least, an organized space so that we can have the most productive day possible!

I am giving myself a deadline of ONE WEEK to get this cube in shape. ONE WEEK! That should be more than enough time right? Yeah Right. I mean, this is after all the space I spend over 40 hours a week in. No wonder I've gone crazy in the head!

So, next Wednesday morning I will post pics of the completely clean and organized cube...of my dreams! I must be held accountable for this atrocity.....and you have permission to hunt me down if I am unsuccessful.

After all is said and done.....it will be clean.....organized.....and I will then be able to conquer the design world!!!

New Year.....New Everything!

Happy New Year!!!
It's great to be back after some very busy weeks before the holidays and a great Christmas break.

I had the most wonderful past week (after a couple of very hectic ones)! Tons of relaxation, tons of food, and tons of quality time with family and friends. I'm not gonna lie when I tell you people thought something was wrong with me because I slept so much. I guess my body was trying to tell me something.....so I gave it what it wanted!

Now that I'm all rested up I am rearing and ready to conquer 2011! While I had my week break from work, and all computer related anything, I made tons of lists for the new year. Lists just work for me and help me visualize everything....does this work for anyone else? I made business lists, staying healthy lists, getting organized lists...you get the picture. I have so many wishes and ideas to make 2011 a fabulous year.

I also took a long hard look at the past year to determine what was great, and what didn't work that well. I even re-read my entire blog one day while we were all just sitting around (okay so one tiny computer related thing). Golly Day! I am such a bummer! Practically every other post was about how tired I was or how I had way too many things to do and couldn't wait for the weekend to get there. Reality Check! It's so weird to go back and read what you have written en mass.....you really get a true look at yourself. Anyone else done this? I highly recommend it if you haven't done it before.

There will be some definite changes here at bummer'ville and I hope that I can shake that whole feeling here asap! I have plans for some new weekly features, showing about the projects I am working on (and actually completing some personal projects), and also about how I am completely inspired by the history, and principles of design in general. We will also be moving soon! To a new web address and new blog/website that is. I am still getting that all worked out and have given myself an internal deadline (still internal at this point so I can work some things out with my web master....yep, that's what I'll call him). It's all part of the bigger plan to get my business moving! I have had an actual business license since 2004 and it's about time I get up and do something with it.

And speaking of moves.....my husband and I are moving too! And I'm talking houses this time. So, I have a whole new place to put a fresh set of eyes on. That means more projects in my near future. And the fun part starts when we get rid of practically everything that we have! That's right, all new stuff!!! We have made a pact that if we don't like it, it doesn't move with us.....now that's a good way to start out the new year organized.

Whew.....that does seem like a lot, and some of you may be thinking....."good luck with all that". But I can't be a watcher anymore......it's time to be a doer!

So, here's to a fabulous 2011......hope you guys are as ready as I am!

A Pause

So, I have to take a break. I don't want to but I know it's in my best interest to do so.

My work load has tripled at my job and there is no way I am even close to keeping up. I will unfortunately be putting in insane overtime hours the next couple of weeks so I will have no time to do any of the wonderful things I love. Blogging, reading, and just all around weekend laziness will have to be put on hold for a bit so I can get all these looming deadlines out the door.

Although unlikely, I may post on a couple of things if I have time but for the most part I will not be able to. You can stay updated if I happen to stop back in by adding me to your reader or even subscribing via e-mail. You can do both via the sidebar to the left. I hate to step away at this wonderful time but it's an absolute must. I will definitely be back in full force for the new year.

I would also like to say thank you to all of you that stop by and read After Adornment. I know we are all busy people and it truly makes my day when I receive your wonderful comments and e-mails. When I started this blog back in May I never dreamed that anyone would actually read it! I have had the pleasure of connecting with so many great people through this blog and have loved every minute so far. I know that by the time I am done with this break I will be more than itching to get back into the swing of things!

I hope everyone has a safe and happy holidays with your family and friends!

Until later...I sign off for now.

As a side note I will be attending the Lavish conference this weekend here in Atlanta. I am very excited to meet some of you in person after months of online chatter. And, I will be attending Julie's blogger gathering next week. If you haven't checked out her blog Milk and Honey Home, you must! Julie has amazing taste and she and her friend Anisa have recently started up their own design biz....great things to be found here and I can only imagine what's in store for them in 2011!

Counting Down

Today is December 1st. The first day of the Christmas Holidays. Well for me at least. I don't know if I can say that about everyone (like my husband who really wanted to start playing Christmas music last week).

When I was growing up my parents would always present my sister and I with an advent calendar to count down the days till Christmas. Starting on Dec 1st we would open a new door each day to find a small chocolate treat waiting for us. Now, I know all about Advent and the fact that it may not necessarily start on the 1st, but that's when we always started ours for the sake of counting down with the days till Christmas Eve.

I just remembered all this the other day and wished I would have thought of it earlier. What a great way to count down the days even as a grown up. I love the one shown above from La Maison Du Chocolat. Nothing would make the days go faster than a french chocolate treat at the end of the day. Isn't that what one wanted as a kid.....Christmas to be here tomorrow?

Did anyone else have this tradition when they were growing up? Still doing it yourself or with your children?

Two Years And Counting

Did everyone have a good Halloween weekend? We spent the weekend relaxing and not much else. For the past couple of years we really haven't jumped on the Halloween bandwagon. No costumes and no pumpkins, but we get some candy in case kids happen to ring the doorbell (4 total the past 2 years).

Not trying to be a grumps about the holiday but we just haven't been into it lately. Maybe next year.

We do however celebrate our anniversary! Two years ago today we were married here in Atlanta at the Fernbank Museum. So, I guess Halloween ends up being overshadowed. This year we celebrated with a fabulous dinner out. It seems like it has been way more than two years! Here are a few pics of our special day.....

Tonight we also have a special dinner planned at home. My sister who is a chef is going to have dinner ready for us when we both get home from work tonight! I am excited to see what she has made, and I know it's gonna be good. Dinner and some champagne and the celebration will be complete. A toast to many, many, many happy years to come!
