Summer Vacation

Headed out for some long awaited R&R for two weeks. A much needed summer vacation where we can relax, eat good food, and take in some sites. It will be great to get out of town and get a new perspective for awhile.

I will not be blogging, but if you're at all curious hop on over HERE and see some vacation pics....I am loving instagram right now. Or, you can follow me at lissapierce.

Have a great couple of weeks and I'll be back in a few.
Happy Summer!

Minty Fresh

I was working with some nice minty paint colors the other day and I just love the calming feeling the spaces have with this relaxing color.

Lately mint has been a "hot" trendy color that everyone is talking about for interiors and fashion. I am all about the color but not sure how much I could love it three or four years down the road. I don't think I could ever jump on the band wagon but I do have to admit that I love looking at it.

How about you? Could you go minty? Or just like to look?

Monday Mind Dump

I hope everyone had a nice relaxing weekend (or full and busy if that's your thing). We had a great weekend with my husbands parents in town. There was plenty of relaxing, talking, and eating great food.

My husband is an amazing cook and last night he made this awesome grilled peach salad that I can't get off my mind. I know this is not a food blog and I don't post recipes, but this salad was so great, I just have to post the recipe and pass it on.

Grilled Peach, Onion, and Bacon Salad with Buttermilk Dressing
1/4 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup sour cream
1/4 cup buttermilk
2 tablespoons chopped mint
2 tablespoons chopped parsley
2 tablespoons snipped chives
1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
Salt
Freshly ground pepper
1 pound thick-sliced bacon
1/4 cup light brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
3 pounds Vidalia or other sweet onions, cut into 1-inch-thick slabs
Extra-virgin olive oil, for brushing
4 large ripe peaches, cut into 1/2-inch wedges

  • Preheat the oven to 325°. In a small bowl, whisk the mayonnaise with the sour cream, buttermilk, mint, parsley, chives and vinegar and season with salt and pepper. Refrigerate.
  • Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. Arrange the bacon slices on the sheet in a single layer and sprinkle with the brown sugar and cayenne. Bake for about 25 minutes, until caramelized (the bacon will crisp as it cools). Let cool, then cut the bacon into bite-size pieces.
  • Meanwhile, light a grill or preheat a grill pan. Brush the onions with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Grill over moderate heat, turning occasionally, until softened and browned, 10 minutes. Separate the onions into rings. Brush the peaches with olive oil and grill over moderately high heat until tender, 2 minutes. Transfer to a plate.
  • In a large bowl, toss the onions with the peaches and bacon. Add the buttermilk dressing and toss to coat. Serve right away.

This salad was fast and easy so don't look at it and think otherwise. You could even skip the dressing and use from the bottle if you want (don't tell my husband I said that) but trust me when I tell you the dressing is great. The rest was just chopping and grilling...then assemble and eat. We had people over last night and this salad was a hit! I highly recommend making it for your next party. It was soooo good.

We have all kinds of fun stuff planned this weekend and some great meals are always in the works. I hope you all have a great weekend as well and I will see you back here Monday morning!

Use A Larger Coffee Table

In my opinion you can't go wrong with a huge coffee table that takes up lots of space. It finishes the space and provides a bridge between seating.

It gives a cozy feel and makes a space feel full and comforting. If you take a look at your own living room and feel like something is missing, try a larger coffee table. It will fill the void I tell you and give you a designer look. So many people have a disjointed furniture layout and just don't know how to get that complete look. The easiest fool proof way to go is to place your main seating group around a large coffee table. Big enough to pull everything around but still work within the space you have. This is especially helpful when you have too much space you don't know what to do with. Wouldn't we all love to have that problem?? Create that main conversation area and then work from there.

How about you? Do you already use a large coffee table to create a zone? Do you have that empty space that just feels unfinished?

Monday Mind Dump

This past weekend was a busy one for us as we were able  to get back into the house and put things back together. We made great headway and are just about put back to where we were before...almost.

We knew that when we got back in the 1st order of business was going to be cleaning. It was insane how much dust there was...even with a "dustless" sander and taping areas off, dust still found its way in everywhere! I think I dusted certain areas and vacuumed three or four times. Every time we moved something more dust would just stir up. Nightmare! I am hoping we are done with all of that but I am sure we will be dusting through the week.

Just in time for the in-laws first visit to see the place. Perfect timing right!!!? Don't worry I'm not stressed one bit (Ahem...sarcasm). Let's just say I'll be glad when it's all over.

So, this week we will be getting this place in ship shape in preparation for parents and a get together on Saturday night. After that, who knows. Now that we have the whole house back we need to get some projects started back up. It's like a fresh start......but midway through.

I hope everyone has a great week ahead!

Our House: In Flux

As I write this I am sitting on a sofa in a hotel room with Wallace the wonder pup sleeping like a rock next to me. We have been kicked out of the house so that they can (FINALLY!) fix the damage made during the flood we had in January.

They are replacing a portion of the hardwood floors on the main level, replacing drywall, carpet, and painting the office downstairs. I am excited to get that space back and get the office set up. I am also really excited that we get the storage back down there! It's been crazy the past couple of months and I felt like we had stuff everywhere. Now, we need to get really organized and make sure all of our keepsakes and papers are kept safe (from water). Just in case.

So, that leaves us in flux this week. Above is a picture of our dining room where I had to move everything from the living room so they could work in there. Most of these items came from the bookshelves behind the sofa. It's amazing how book shelves will just eat so many things....that's a ton of stuff. I had no idea they had that much stuff on them.

I also may not put all of it back. One thing my husband commented on when we had everything cleared out is that it felt better in there. He feels that it was too cluttered. He may be right, and we may pare down the bookshelves a bit to make them appear less cluttered. That's a project for sure.

Until then, we are still in flux and won't be back in till the weekend. Looking forward to that and getting our place put back together. Have a great rest of the week!

Upgrade: Flush Mount Fixtures

If you have one of these....

And you must stay with a surface mount. Please do me a huge favor and switch it out for something more like this.....

Thanks so much.

I always have people ask me for advice when I am at their home, and they find out I'm a designer. I try not to give away too much since it's usually off the cuff and not a full design consultation, but one of my main pieces of advice is to change out the horrible builder grade "boob" fixtures if they have them. Mostly they are always in hallways or smaller entryways where a surface mount fixture is the only option (If it's hanging in the middle of their living room it's a different conversation). But just changing out this one little thing always adds so much....especially to a hallway or small entry.

Monday Mind Dump

How was everyone's weekend? Good I hope. Here in Atlanta we had amazing weather and it was actually nice and cool outside. It was a nice change from some of the hotter days we have been having recently. We took slight advantage and went on a little walk yesterday with Wallace to get some fresh air. Other than that we were inside prepping for the crazy week ahead...more on that later in the week.

On Saturday I went on a hunt through a couple of stores to find some things to spruce up our back deck. I only wished I had done that sooner so we could have just enjoyed the deck this weekend. Oh well. I will have it ready for when the in-laws come in two weeks. Nothing too major, but I did find a great rug and some pillows to add something to the dullness that's there. Hopefully I can have that set up for this coming weekend, but as of now its all just piled in the dining room waiting....

....and I got a great deal on some euro pillows at home goods(not going on the deck). Score.

While I was running around on Saturday I stopped by my aunt's house to pick up some things I had left there during our last visit. She has the most amazing hydrangea bushes all around her house and practically forced me to take some cuttings. She says she sends cuttings home with everyone who stops by because there are so many. I was more than happy to oblige....I mean who can pass up free flowers! And gorgeous ones at that....

.....I might just have to stop back by this weekend too!

And speaking of plants and other living things, I have some good news about my fiddle leaf fig tree. It's sprouted new leaves at the top! Yeah!!!! That means it's not giving up and starting to like the spot it's in. Hopefully it will keep happy and continue to sprout even more. Fingers crossed!
There are still some brown spots on the older leaves and it drops a leaf every once and awhile, but when I saw the new growth I was soooo relieved.

We have also been out to dinner the past two weeks to a couple of great places in Atlanta. Back to 246 in Decatur where I had to have the carbonara again...and lots of great wine.
Then, this past Friday night we ate at Cardamom Hill on the west side. It's coastal Indian cuisine and soooo amazingly good. We went with some other couples, ordered one of everything on the menu, and did everything family style. Everything was so good but if you are ever in the area and happen to go you must get the fried chicken or seafood curry....just trust me on this one. Oh, and the cocktails were amazing too. Sorry I forgot to take pictures there!

 good good wine at 246
amazing carbonara

Well, we are in for a crazy week around here. It's going to be a busy one and hopefully we can make it to the other end in one piece. Hope you all have a great one as well!!

Summer

Okay, so I know that Memorial Day is the "unofficial" start of summer but that's technically still in May. May to me still feels and sounds like spring. You know flowers and showers and stuff. Spring.

Now, when I hear June.....I think summer.

 Beaches

 Alfresco Dining

 Porch Rocking

And Icy Cold Drinks

June 1st has arrived and might I add extremely fast. Does anyone else feel like last week was March? Okay, maybe just me? Either way...here's to a great June. And Summer!
