Our House: Itty Bitty Progress Peek

I have been working on little things around the house the past couple of weeks. Here are a few peeks via some i-phone pics I took.

We got the living room shelves back together and I tweaked a few things....not too much though. And I move things around a lot. I can't help myself sometimes.

Added this colorful piece of art to the gallery wall. Remember this post? I bought one and I love the color. The yellow piece below that is one I am working on. I take it off the wall every once in awhile and add to it. I just keep layering. Then I'll stop when I like it I guess.

Cleaned up and organized this little vignette by the stove. That yellow platter I already had and I love the color it adds to the otherwise neutral kitchen.

Moved this mirror over from the other dresser in the master bedroom. I love the mix of stained wood, grey, and white. We also are finally having the drapes made for this room, and the bed will be here tomorrow! Glad to be making progress somewhere!

Just some little things but all together is a nice bit of progress. I have some bigger projects I need to get working on soon...just need to find and devote some time.

I do love that even when you do the small things it all starts to come together. Bits and pieces and then one day you look at it and are like.....aha, this is starting to look good! Of course we all know it's a constant project. How about you? Have you made little bits of progress on your spaces? Any big changes?

California Dreaming

My mind has been on California for the past couple of weeks and when I get my mind on something, it takes over. Hence my lack of posts last week....I wasn't thinking about design.

We are in the process of planning a "little" road trip in CA for this coming October. I know, months away, but like I said...on my mind. The most my husband and I have been in CA is a layover in LAX and then I have been to LA and South down to San Diego. I am excited to see all of the places we have never been!
We have our itinerary worked out, hotels booked, and an overall general knowledge of what we want to do in each place. Past that, I am starting to dive into the details. I am a planner, and even though we don't plan our trips to death, I still like to know what our options are.

Planning lets you know what to expect. We always book hotels and some tours or things that may be booked when we get there (Alcatraz in SF). My husband is also a major foodie, so we sometimes book restaurants in advance as the heart attack I will have in mid August when we try to book the French Laundry (long shot I know, but it never hurts to try..Ha ha). And don't worry I have researched that to death. Otherwise we go by what we feel like when we get there. Our general rule of thumb is that if it's something we really want to do, we book it and then plan around that.

So, that's where you come in. Anyone have any tips or off the beaten path things that we just cannot miss?
Our Itinerary is as follows:

  • Day 1) Land LAX early am - drive up towards San Luis Obispo and stay night there (full day with no plans). Right now we are thinking drive up 101 through Santa Barbara etc. and stopping when we feel like it but maybe we should get there faster and spend time at wineries in/around Paso Robles?
  • Day 2) Wake up in San Luis Obispo and start drive up through Big Sur to Monterey/Carmel. I think I have this part figured out but is there anything not well known that's a must see?
  • Day 3) Monterey/Carmel - Guys of course are playing golf so the ladies will just be meandering, site seeing etc. Any must not miss here?
  • Day 4) Drive out to Yosemite - Get there mid Day. This is pretty easy too but any tips on something you may have done that you will never forget? Views you will never forget?
  • Day 5) Yosemite all day
  • Day 6) Drive to Napa - We will most likely get there mid day so will have the afternoon and evening.
  • Day 7) Napa all day
  • Day 8) Drive to San Fran - Visit friends in Berkley and stay with them that night.
  • Day 9) Head into San Fran - full day and stay in town
  • Day 10) San Fran all day- Taking red eye out back to Atlanta

Any info would be greatly appreciated! I'll still have California on my mind until we fly out there. Hope you all have a great week.

Paint The Trim Instead

Everyone always thinks painting walls a color is the easiest way to add some pep to a room, but the below pictures have sure made the case that painting the trim instead may be the way to go....

What do you think. Would you paint the trim instead of the walls?

Motivation Comes In Waves

Motivation is my arch nemesis. We just haven't figured each other out entirely or how to work well with one another. It's just one of those things that I am learning about myself that my motivation comes in waves, and that I get into these ruts of mediocrity.

I always have such great internal dialogue with myself and visions of grandeur on getting things accomplished. Then, it just takes me forever to actually do it. My priorities have been a bit off and lately have been geared more towards relaxation and leisure.

Now, don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with relaxation and leisure. It's just that these things are getting in the way of things I would like to accomplish. To sum it up....I am in my own way! I am the only thing holding back success and accomplishment. I fall back to the things that are comfortable and easy instead of putting myself out there and taking risks. Risk freaks me out. And really what I want isn't that huge of a risk....I am just thinking it is.

I need to figure out how to get through this little problem so I can be everything I think I can be. Sorry to step away from design today. I am designing my life right now. This has been a little post on self realization and accountability.

ouch...that actually hurts. But it's true!

Have you guys seen the recent GSD posts over at Mimi+Meg? Get over there if you haven't. Fabulous idea and I have loved both posted so far. Just reading about other people getting it together and accomplishing their dreams is very motivating. And they actually somewhat spell out how to do it. I have read a couple of things I would like to implement to make things a bit easier. Hopefully it will stick....though in all honesty I will probably need some more posts from her to really get kick started.

It's Monday! The perfect day to start something.
Have a great week :)

Summer Storms

Summer thunderstorms have been the norm here in Atlanta this week. I love a good thunderstorm but this week they have all hit when I am driving home from work. Not fun considering Atlanta traffic isn't that great in the 1st place.

I took this shot the other night on instagram right when I got home...the storm was coming and I had already driven out of it on my way home from work. Kinda scary. I love all the different blues in the sky when you see the edge of the storm. And the bright white edge because of the sun. So pretty to me.

Hopefully the storms will let up for this weekend, though having them cools us down a bit. We have some family plans this weekend and I also hope to get to Scott's tomorrow. Hopefully. I haven't been in years and a visit is well overdue. And I hope Mom can come with me.

Have a great weekend and see you back here next week!

Upgrade: Leather Sofas

If you happen to have one of these.....

And you just have to have leather. Please do me a favor and switch it out for something more like this.....

Thanks so much.

This is the number one thing guys can do to keep the leather they love and update the look. The pillow arm, double cushion back is no longer hot gentlemen. Get thee to a store fast and make the switch. You will thank me later. There are way to many good options out there to keep what you have. I mean, all of the good options above are from Crate & Barrel and the price points are quite reasonable for leather. For those intimidated by design, you can't get much easier than Crate & Barrel.

And if you are really feeling ambitious.....go for this!...even better if you find a great vintage one.

The epitome of a classic leather sofa. Manly yet still polished.

We had such a great relaxing vacation. For the most part we spent our time at our cabin in the mountains and it was such a great escape from both the city, and the heat!

Nothing like being surrounded by peace and quite, and beautiful scenery.

All of these pictures are from a little nature walk I took around the cabin. I didn't go far but saw so much just within the few steps away from the house. The first and last are pictures I took from our deck...where I was reading. It's just so pretty up there, and the temperature was a nice cool 80 degrees. Much better than the 102 degree temps we returned to in Atlanta.

The rest of the time I was sitting on the deck (swinging or rocking) and reading through magazines. We ate out every night so we didn't have to cook, and tried not to really do anything that required too much effort. We took long drives on the Blue Ridge Parkway. We stopped in all the little shops we saw that looked interesting. We checked out other houses high on mountain tops. We even took our pup down to the river and he loved it. He's a small terrier and didn't like swimming but he loved chasing the minnows in the shallow parts. It was great! All in all we enjoyed a relaxing vacation. I only wish we could have stayed longer but life must go on and work must continue.

I hope all of you had a great holiday and hopefully got in some relaxing. After my week, I highly recommend it.
