Weekend Wishes 3.25.11

So, another week has come and gone.....in a blur. Does anyone other than me hope that things will slow up a bit soon? I can't seem to keep up with life and it's starting to wear me out!

This weekend should be great! I didn't get any of my console painted last week so that is still on my list. Hopefully I can get my act together.....I'm so close to getting it done! It would be nice to check a project off my list. I definitely think it will help to get me motivated to start more new ones! Also, I'm thinking of having someone apply the lacquer professionally instead of doing it myself. Anyone have any experience with this? I would love a super high-gloss sheen. Anyone in the Atlanta area know of where I could take it? I have started to look but figure I would ask you guys.

I also plan to get out of the house (so this might trump the console painting) and do some browsing for pieces we need for the new place. I plan to head out and spend some real quality time in the West End Design District. I feel like I haven't been down there in so long and really take the time to browse all the shops. I'll make sure I do a write up next week about my day, what I found, and some of the great stores down there.

So that's it.....like it isn't enough! Hope you guys have a great weekend and I'll be back on Monday.

Monochromatic Love

I have always been drawn to rooms using a monochromatic color scheme. Some may shy away from this pallet because they see it as flat and boring. Some may also think its the easy way out of designing a space. I beg to differ and see it as a challenging application where it can be difficult to achieve perfection. If really done well it's never flat and boring. Mixing textures, patterns, and color saturation keeps things interesting. Just look at the examples above, all are monochromatic schemes that have interest and life!

Why would you light your home like a warehouse????

The other night I walked out to get the mail and noticed that one of our neighbors is using harsh fluorescent bulbs in their ceiling fan lights. I assume that it's in a bedroom or office since it is the smaller bedroom upstairs (we all have the same floor plans). I wanted to knock on their door and tell them that there was a better way.......to not live like you were in a warehouse! I actually shuddered when I saw it. (First offence was using the overhead light in the 1st place.....but I understand that I can't win that battle every time)

I know everyone has been jumping on the bandwagon and trying to be the most energy efficient that they can be. This includes using fluorescent bulbs in lamps and overhead lighting. And, I agree with this change and people doing what they feel to make our planet a better place. But, ever notice how blue and cold the light from a fluorescent bulb is? That it actually may give a blue cast to the room? Well, I'm here to tell you that there's a better way.......to not look like you live in a warehouse!

Not a good look...too harsh!

Much better! Soft Warm Lighting........via The Selby

It all has to do with the color temperature that is put out by the bulb. Okay, now before I loose you entirely here is the short definition of color temperature:

"Color temperature is a characteristic of visible light that has important applications in lighting, photography, videography, publishing, manufacturing, astrophysics, and other fields. The color temperature of a light source is the temperature of an ideal black-body radiator that radiates light of comparable hue to that of the light source. Color temperature is conventionally stated in the unit of absolute temperature, the kelvin, having the unit symbol K. Color temperatures over 5,000K are called cool colors (blueish white), while lower color temperatures (2,700–3,000 K) are called warm colors (yellowish white through red)."
Via Wikipedia

This is one of the fundamentals that I learned in design school and have been a stickler for it ever since. The lower the number on the Kelvin scale = the warmer the light is. See the chart below for some of the Kelvin readings for everyday light examples:

See, the warmer light (like candle light and Incandescent) have lower Kelvin numbers. Most fluorescent bulbs you buy in the store when you aren't looking for the right Kelvin number are in the 3500K-4000K (next time look on the box- it says it right there). And as you can see that's up there with the brightness of a full sunny day outside at noon.....like when you would be wearing sunglasses. I don't want to have to wear sunglasses in my house, do you?

My neighbor had 5500K!!!! Ewww.

Most people enjoy and feel comfortable with the light that a 100W incandescent bulb puts out or, about 2700K color temperature (some like lower, some like higher).  As you can see in the above picture that gives you a very warm, almost orange light vs. the blue hue of the 13W Fluorescent. It makes everyone look good too! Now, since I'm still a proponent for being energy efficient that leaves us in a predicament right?

Nope, not at all. Fluorescent bulbs can be found at 2700K! That's right, all the energy efficiency you want with all the warm lighting you want too. Now, I have actually never seen a 2700K fluorescent bulb at Home Depot or Target but you can easily order online. There are tons of online sellers and typing 2700K flourescent into the search bar pulls up all kinds of vendors. Since flourescents last longer than incandescent you don't have to replace as often either. And, since this would be the best of both worlds a little extra work can't hurt right?

I still haven't crossed over to fluorescent for all of my lights. I am still a user of incandescent bulbs in my lamps and chandeliers/pendants. I do however use fluorescent bulbs for closets, pantry, laundry room, and other misc overhead light areas in our house. And, I order my 2700K online so it never looks like a warehouse in any area of my home.

How about you? Do you use fluorescent bulbs? Will you change yours now?

Spring At Last

This past weekend spring arrived.....literally!

Not only was it the actual Spring Equinox yesterday (March 20th) but amazing weather came with it here in the south. Spring and fall are my favorite seasons because of the more milder temps and gorgeous color that surrounds you. In the Spring, it's the flowers!!!!

Aren't they beautiful? I can never look at too many photos of pretty flowers. All of the above images are gorgeous photographs from the Etsy sellers listed. If you haven't seen spring yet...this would be a great way to add some to your home!

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and fabulous weather! If not here's a prayer that great waether will find you soon!

Weekend Wishes 3.18.11

What a week. It's been busy but not uncontrollable like the past couple weeks.....its been somewhat of a nice break. And with the weather looking good for this weekend....things are looking up!

My plans for the weekend are much like the last one....

We still need to get some things done around the house. I have a buffet that I started painting awhile back and I need to get that project back up and running, and finished! It would be great to get it done....but I'm not going to kill myself in the attempt. Hopefully I can have the reveal posted soon.

And, basketball reigns this weekend. The NCAA tournament has begun and the TV will be occupied solely for this purpose all weekend (or actually for the rest of the month) whether to watch games or to watch people discussing games..........GO UNC!

When I'm sick of hearing the sound of buzzers and whistles, I'll head outside! It's supposed to be an amazing weekend and soaking up some sun will most definitely do me some good. Hope everyone else has a great weekend and gets to some much needed rest and relaxation....Monday will be back before you know it!

Jewel Box

Every time someone asks me to come take a look at their home for advice I often notice that they have left the poor little powder bath neglected. Maybe they have painted the walls the same as the hallway and maybe they still have the mirror put in by the builder.

Blah....this space could use a little life!

I always tell them that the powder bath is the space where you can go crazy because a) it's a small space, and b) the space is only used for a few minutes and can therefore stand out. What better way to make your guests take notice then to make your powder bath the jewel box of your main floor!

If you have a neutral home, why not paint the powder room a fun bright accent color? Put up the more expensive large scale pattern wallpaper.....you won't need very much. Do something funky! Use the nice tile on the floor since you don't have much square footage....or even add that tile to the walls. The options are unlimited.

I have been thinking a lot about the powder bath on our main floor and ways that I can jazz ours up. We are in a rental so unfortunately I can't go too crazy, but I can use paint and change the mirror. I can add some amazing art and accessories to make it feel like i didn't forget about the space. I have some ideas already and can't wait to show you when I have it done.

Must Have

Love the sunny pop of yellow this settee has. I am in a quandary as to whether or not I should add this to my living room. A bit scared as I normally use neutral fabrics on major upholstery pieces.....like white, charcoal, and grey. Should I just go for it????

Either way, it's a fun and sunny piece to look at on this dreary day of rain and clouds.

Weekend Wishes 3.11.11

More unpacking...blah, blah, blah. Don't worry I'm not going to talk about the move again. This weekend I have other plans in mind as well as doing some more unpacking and organizing.

At least I'm not the only one who can't decide on a coffee table......

I think some thrifting is on order. I feel like I haven't been out and about in so long....and the urge is about to kill me. I need to find an interesting coffee table and I think finding something unique is going to be in a thrift or antique/vintage store. Not entirely sure what I am looking for yet, so I hope it jumps out and bites me. I have a few places in mind already but if anyone knows of any great places in Atlanta.....do tell!

And, I'll still be contemplating the layout and decor of our house. I have the plans drawn up now all I have to do is a furniture layout. To me this is the easiest way to see what you need and what will fit. Better get that done before the coffee table hunt so I don't mess that up.....

Other than that, I just want to catch up on some me time and relax a bit. I am in dire need of a pedicure, and with the soon to be changing weather I can't wear open-toed shoes looking like this! I'd also like to take my new tub for a spin and soak for awhile. I am so excited to have a tub.....I haven't had one since I moved out of my parents house a long time ago. It's been too long.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Just Being

I have had a very relaxed attitude the past week. It seems that whenever I have that go go go mentality and a to do list to fill it I crash at the end when I no longer have to keep up the pace. Hence my lack of posting......sorry I am taking advantage.

We have been leisurely unpacking and getting things in order at the house.....definitely still can't take pictures, that's how leisurely it is. My lack of go go go the past week has me in a transient state just being. I'm not gonna lie, it's kinda nice. Though I can say that my husband wishes I had a bit more drive for the day....but he understands.

I have also just been sitting in some of our rooms and thinking about what I want to do with them. I want a relaxed and comfortable feel but also injected with life and color at the same time. I want people to come in and feel cozy and stay awhile. All while keeping it light and fun. That's what has me puzzled. I am lost at the moment in figuring out the look of our home. I have some inspiration already but past that I am at a standstill on how to achieve the look. I don't know, maybe designers block. It will come back at some point.

I'll get back to the regular soon, but for now I'm just enjoying my time devoted to getting things in order at the new place, and making plans for some new things. Hope everyone has a great week and I'll see you around here when the mood strikes.
