They Would Live Here - Sara

So, I haven't been so good at keeping up with the series I started.....I will get better. This is the 2nd entry for my series "They Would Live Here". You can read more about it here.

This is Sara (of course not her real name).

Cute, stylish, and looks nice and approachable. She reminds me of my good friend Mary Frances, so this is kinda a half fake/half real room design person...but not really. Based on her outfit it looks like she is a fan of basics with bright pops of color in her accessories. So, this is Sara's bedroom.......

Sara is a true southern girl who loves the mix of old a new. She uses antiques passed down and also jazzes it up with new and girly pieces. She is likes to keep things sophisticated but also doesn't want to make her space feel older. She loves traditional pieces but also loves to turn tradition upside down a bit too. She is a young professional who wants a feminine space that isn't too young in feel. And, she keeps her schedule packed so she loves a low maintenance and relaxed look and feel to her home.

New Beginnings

Hope everyone had a wonderful Easter weekend spent with their family and friends! We spent the weekend relaxing for the most part but had a few gatherings thrown in there. Overall it was a great!

This week marks the beginning of an end for me. I am changing jobs and this is my last week before I start my new one! Yeah, no break for me but I am super excited for something new and all that is in store for the future.

I will miss my job and all the great people I have had the pleasure of working with over the past 5 years. It has been an amazing experience and I have learned so much. Designing hotels has been both rewarding and challenging and I know that I am more than prepared for what lies ahead.

So, all this week, I will be posting pictures on twitter of little things that have been part of my everyday life in hospitality design. Just a little sneak peak into my days and office. Oh, and don't freak out when I show you guys what a working design office really looks like........A crazy MESS!!!

Here's to a great week and new beginnings. Have a great week...I know I will!

Happy Easter

This table just screams easter and spring to me. The tulips, jelly beans, tiny carrots, and that amazing coral and orange color scheme! Gorgeous.

Hope everyone is having a wonderful day/weekend. Spending time with family? Great brunch or lunch? Making Easter eggs? Anyone having an easter egg hunt? That was my favorite part of easter when I was little.

I am having brunch with my family today....and wearing a colorful dress! Happy Easter Everyone!!!

Field Trip

I'm over at Arianna's blog Organized Interiors today with my list of the top 5 things that have influenced me the most.

I was flabbergasted and beyond honored when Arianna asked me to be a part of the series. She has an amazing blog and I anxiously await her next post each day. Its full of great inspiration and she always posts the most amazing spaces and organizing tips. If you haven't checked her out you are definitely missing out!

Check out my "5 Things", and also make sure you read about all the other ladies' "5 Things" HERE. It's always fun to read about what makes people tick.

Our House: The Plans

Right after we signed over the lease and were a week away from moving in, I drew up a floor plan of our house. Part of me couldn't wait to get started figuring things out, and the other part wanted to let the movers know where some of the things we kept were going. This was really important considering we have three floors....I wanted to make sure we didn't have to do any heavy lifting after they left.

Above is the three floors of our town home. I have all of the rooms laid out with things that we already have, and also things that I am looking for. For me it's a great way to figure out what else we need and what will fit. This is key when I am out looking for pieces, so that I can keep the scale in mind. I highly advise if you are working on a space to do some type of helps soooo much!

After I completed the layout I was then able to come up with my master list and collect my thoughts. Now all I have to do is start collecting pieces and figure out fabrics etc. Let the fun begin!!!!

Anyone else start their design plan with a floorplan layout?

I could definitely use some of this action.....

I have a few changes going on that have added some stress to my already busy life. No worries, it's actually good stress (if there is such a thing) and I have some exciting new things in store for me.

On a side note, I am back to taking my kick-boxing class tonight. It's been months since I have been able to go because my job has kept me working overtime instead. Well, no more of that.....kickboxing here I come! That's also probably why I am thinking about taking a nice relaxing bath. I am most definitely sure my muscles will be hurting later.

Hope everyone is having a great week!

Al Fresco

With this wonderful weather we've been having it's next to impossible to not want to spend every waking moment enjoying it. That of course includes dining al fresco......

Under the shade of trees, or basking in the sun, outdoor dining is one of my favorite things about the spring and early summer. Unfortunately the full on summer here in Atlanta can get a bit too hot most days and nights to make relaxing outside...well, relaxing. So, since we only have a short window I like to take full advantage. What about you? How do you enjoy dining al fresco????

Weekend Wishes 4.15.11

Yeah Friday! This week seemed to fly by and I can say was a great break from the busy busy busy that has been happening for the last couple of weeks. It was spent catching up on all kinds of small work related tasks and also catching up on reading.

A yummy breakfast on the back deck would be great this weekend!

This weekend will be devoted to catching up on the looks like a tornado came through. Laundry, dishes, and all the rest of the neglected needs to be done. If we're going to make any headway on that list we need to get things more streamlined and organized. Other than that the husband and I plan on keeping things pretty low key. Last weekend was packed and in order to save some money and energy we will most likely run errands and do things around the house. Nothing exciting.....but that's good!

Some time to soak and collect thoughts would be divine.

So, here is to a wonderful relaxing weekend (or jam packed if you so wish). I can't believe April is already half over....summer will be here before you know it! Have a great one, and see you next week!

The Master List - Our House

In order to keep myself on track and also get a little birdie in my husbands ear, I have made a master list of what we need to get the "design" of our home complete. Although, complete is a strong word.....I don't think I will ever be complete with my surroundings, and will continue to move things around and add/subtract as time goes on.

A couple of weeks ago, Ally at FTRB made her list and I thought it was a great idea! This gets my ideas down on "paper", and also validates that I have things to get done. Thanks for the motivation bump Ally!

- buy and hang shelf
-find art/mirror

Living Room/Kitchen
- gallery wall (find and hang)
- buy bookshelves for behind sofa
- find coffee table
- buy "the chair" for hubby
- find and buy throw pillows
- drapery - find fabric
- find pair of small chairs
- get cabinet shelves for kitchen storage

Dining Room
- buy and hang chandelier
- finish painting console!!!!
- find lamps
- hang art and mirrors
- drapery - find fabric

Powder Bath
- paint???
- find new mirror
- hang small shelf
- find art

Master Bedroom
- drapery -buy fabric
- buy bed
- find nightstand for me
- find lamp for dresser
- hang art
- paint my dresser

Guest Bedroom
- paint bed? find new?
- find and hang art
- drapery - find fabric
- buy reading light
- find nightstand and lamp
- buy shower curtain

- buy bookshelves
- diy pin-up board
- paint desk
- drapery - buy more fabric
- buy frames and hang art
- buy more shelving for closet

So, that's it. Nothing amazing, but like I said, it gets the list down and holds me the eyes of design bloggers/readers!!! Real motivation would be to have you guys over for dinner in a month or two....that would get any designer working like crazy!

There is lot's to do and of course I would love for it all to be done now.....realistically it will take awhile. I will be documenting the process here and hashing out some ideas with you all as well! And as always I am on a budget so I hope to come up with some creative ideas and thrifting my way through some of this list.

Hope everyone is having a great week so far. Busy one as usual, but manageable for me. Have a great Thursday!

Interior Renderings and Sketches

I have really been thinking lately about how I can't sketch design ideas out like I used to. I mean, I still can but they don't look good. I think I've lost it! Before I was using CAD all the time I would just sketch out my ideas in a notebook or on anything else I could find. Now, I just hop straight onto the computer and work my ideas out there.

Albert Hadley

It's sad in that recently I have seen more and more people doing the same. These days students come out of school with portfolios full of everything done on the computer. Now a days the plan is done in the computer and then the program pulls up the perspective....and then another program colors it! What happened to good ol' 1 point and 2 point perspectives with hand rendering!! It's almost like the art of sketching and drawing is dying. I say almost because there are still a few out there who still do it.....and do it well!

Jacquelyn Blackwell

In order to get better at sketching again I have decided to start practicing sketching and working out ideas on paper. And I'm not just talking about sketching flowers and stuff I pass by, I'm talking about sketching interiors. Elevations, quick perspectives, and scale! Nothing is better to get a point across in a design meeting than to be able to sketch it up real quick right in front of the client.

Michelle Morelan

It will take me awhile to get back into the hang of it.....or maybe it's just like riding a bike??? Either way, I hope to have some great sketches to show you guys soon. Hmmmn I wonder if I have any old sketches and perspectives from school? If I do, I'll post some of those but something tells me they are long gone by now. It would be wonderful to hone my skills to get back into full on renderings.....but at this point that's just wishful thinking. It would be awesome if I could sketch and render like all of these images shown!

Satiz Phosrithong

Anyone else care to join me in practicing interior sketches? Or better yet, anyone have any sketches they have already done...I would love to post them!

Lighten Up For Spring

Spring is here, and there is nothing worse than spending a gorgeous day outside to only return to a home that's still in winter mode.  Here are a couple of ways to add some spring into your home and brighten things up. I am definitely in spring mode now and will be incorporating some of these tips below to make our place light and bright.

Change Out Throw Pillows

This is the easiest way to spruce up your sofa, bed, or anywhere else you have toss pillows. Change out those velvets and dark colors. Switch them to bright prints, and textured lights. To make things even easier....just cover your darker pillows with new covers....voila!

Lighten Up Larger Pieces of Furniture

Lighter slipcovers will do wonders here. Sofa, Lounge Chairs, Dining Chairs.....the list could go on. Even changing out to a lighter duvet cover on the bed. Don't have a slipcover or funds to get one? Just use a larger blanket and cover a portion of the piece.

Change Out Your Drapes

Got heavy drapes to keep cold drafts outside? Change em up to a nice light and breezy set. Nothing is more springy than light drapes flowing in the breeze of open windows. Or, change out darker colors for brighter pops of color. Also, open up the blinds and let the light in! least before the temps turn scorching hot. You can also remove drapery all together if you like the look....and let in even more light!

Bring In Flowers and Plants

Nuff said brings the outdoors in!

Change Out Rugs

Change out your heavy wool rugs to sisal or lighter cotton versions. You can even get the wool rugs cleaned while not in use. Then they will be all ready to go back down in the fall and winter.

Switch Out Some Accessories

Another super easy way to change the look to spring. Brighter accessories, glass, and other pieces can go a long way to brighten up the feeling of the space.

So, what are you doing to make your home light and bright for spring????? Anyone already transformed their home for the warmer weather?

Weekend Wishes 4.10.11

I know this is a couple days late and the weekend is over but it's been so long and I just had to post (I was starting to break out in hives because I  missed it so much....hehe). So actually this is more of a weekend recap.

This weekend was great! Impromptu weekend guests, girls night out, baseball/concert, and freshly did hair.
On Friday evening we did a whirlwind spruce up for our guest bedroom. I mean whirlwind because the bed was sitting there in pieces, stuff everywhere, no light, no shower get the picture. It was no fabulous room after we finished but they did have all the necessities. Actually the way it is now is the perfect "before" picture for when I start getting it all pulled together. More on that later.

Saturday was spent chatting design and getting my hair done. Yes, my colorist/stylist is a great friend who is also an interior designer. So, we chat for hours about design, our jobs, and life...all while my color sets. And then I went out that night and spent some quality time with the ladies. Let's just say, I'm so glad to be's tough out there! The guys were just cracking me up with some of the stuff they say. Rediculous!

Sunday was spent recovering in the morning with an amazing brunch at Top Flr. Such a cool little place that you must try if you are in or ever are in Atlanta. Then, we headed down to Turner Field to watch the Braves lose to the Phillies. Booo. It made it all worth while though with the Avett Brothers concert after the game. After that we came home and passed out exhausted from the long day in the sun.
It's been a great one after such a hectic last couple of weeks. Hope everyone had a great weekend as well! Back to design posts tomorrow...promise.

I'm still here!

How is everyone??

Busy like me???? I hope not too much. Busy is always good, but the past couple of weeks have been brutal. We have some big projects in the office and I am pulling in some major overtime on those. And I have a new side project helping an amazing couple with their master bathroom!

I just wanted to stop in and say hey and to let you know that (a) I'm still alive, and (b) this blog is still alive. It's just taking a little rest while I get all of this work done. I get the chance every couple of days to check out some blogs and it seems like I'm not the only one.....Lots of people are busy! This is good. It means more people want the help of a designer again!

For the most part it will be spotty on here for the rest of the week, but hopefully not too much longer. Hope all is well with everyone and you all are enjoying a touch of spring. Stay busy, but stay sane!
